Dust dynamics during protoplanetary disc clearing

چکیده

We consider the dynamics of dust and gas during the clearing of protoplanetary discs. We work within the context of a photoevaporation/viscous model for the evolution of the gas disc, and use a two-fluid model to study the dynamics of dust grains as the gas disc is cleared. Small (. 10μm) grains remain well-coupled to the gas, but larger (∼ 1mm) grains are subject to inward migration from large radii (∼ 50AU), suggesting that the time-scale for grain growth in the outer disc is ∼ 104–105yr. We describe in detail the observable appearance of discs during clearing, and find that pressure gradients in the gas disc result in a strong enhancement of the local dust-to-gas ratio in a ring near to the inner disc edge. Lastly, we consider a simple model of the disc-planet interaction, and suggest that observations of disc masses and accretion rates provide a straightforward means of discriminating between different models of disc clearing.

Dust-Dust Collisional Charging and Lightning in Protoplanetary Discs

We study the role of dust-dust collisional charging in protoplanetary discs. We show that dust-dust collisional charging becomes an important process in determining the charge state of dust and gas, if there is dust enhancement and/or dust is fluffy, so that dust surface area per disc volume is locally increased. We solve the charge equilibrium equations for various disc environments and dust c...

Five steps in the evolution from protoplanetary to debris disk

The protoplanetary disks seen around Herbig Ae stars eventually dissipate leaving just a tenuous debris disk, comprised of planetesimals and the dust derived from them, as well as possibly gas and planets. This paper uses the properties of the youngest (10-20Myr) A star debris disks to consider the transition from protoplanetary to debris disk. It is argued that the physical distinction between...

Global MHD simulations of stratified and turbulent protoplanetary discs. II. Dust settling

Aims. The aim of this paper is to study the vertical profile of small dust particles in protoplanetary discs in which angular momentum transport is due to MHD turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability. We consider particle sizes that range from approximately 1 micron up to a few millimeters. Methods. We use a grid–based MHD code to perform global two-fluid simulations of turbulent ...

Dust Sedimentation and Self-sustained Kelvin-helmholtz Turbulence in Protoplanetary Disc Mid-planes

We perform numerical simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the mid-plane of a protoplanetary disc. A two-dimensional corotating slice in the azimuthal–vertical plane of the disc is considered where we include the Coriolis force and the radial advection of the Keplerian rotation flow. Dust grains, treated as individual particles, move under the influence of friction with the gas, wh...

Radiatively heated , protoplanetary discs with dead zones . I . Dust settling and thermal structure of discs around M stars

The irradiation of protoplanetary discs by central stars is the main heating mechanism for discs, resulting in their flared geometric structure. In a series of papers, we investigate the deep links between 2D self-consistent disc structure and planetary migration in irradiated discs, focusing particularly on those around M stars. In this first paper, we analyse the thermal structure of discs th...
